SUV Rams into Carnival Crowd in Mannheim, Germany: One person died while several others were left with severe injuries after a car plowed into a crowd in Germany's Mannheim city on Monday.
A major police operation is underway following the incident at Mannheim, an official said without providing more details. It's understood that one person has been arrested, according to a police official.
"We can now confirm that a car was driven into a pedestrian zone and that one person was killed," said police spokesman Stefan Wilhelm, adding that several people were injured.

While pre-Lenten carnivals were in full swing across the country, the parades in cities like Mannheim and other parts of the Rhineland were taking place.
Despite the gathered crowd cheering loudly, an eyewitness account states that a black SUV went speeding through the masses from Paradeplatz square in the center of the city to the landmark water tower in Mannheim, as reported by the news outlet Mannheim24.
The carnival celebration included Rose Monday as a long weekend; consequently, many cities organized parades. Mannheim’s street parade was held already on Sunday.

Police declined to clarify the cause of the large law enforcement presence in the city centre but a spokesperson said the incident had been reported as “life-threatening deployment situation.”
Police were seen with heavy-duty armaments cordoning off the expansive area and also had police helicopters hovering over the area, as per reports from AFP.
Authorities requested the public to keep off the downtown area in Mannheim and to stay home. Other details were not immediately available.
Mannheim, with a population of 326,000 people, is located about 85 kilometers (52 miles) south of Frankfurt.
