Fans had high expectations for Bobby after witnessing him spar with Ranbir Kapoor in Animal (2023). But instead of making an impression, the grandiose fantasy action movie was a box office failure, making only one-third of its original budget.
You can only imagine how shocked internet users were to learn that Kanguva was a leading candidate for the 2025 Oscars.

After a poor box office showing within a month of its debut, Kanguva went digital and made its appearance on OTT.
With a budget of ₹300–350 crore, it was one of the most costly Indian films ever produced, yet it only made 106 crore and was a failure.

And now, it is reportedly competing with the likes of Shuchi Talati’s Girls Will Be Girls (2024) and Payal Kapadia’s critically acclaimed All We Imagine as Light (2024), which had two nominations at the Golden Globes 2025.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that 323 feature films have been chosen to compete in the 97th Academy Awards, with 207 of those films qualifying for the Best Picture category.
Kanguva (Tamil), Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life (Hindi), Santosh (Hindi), Swatantrya Veer Savarkar (Hindi), All We Imagine as Light (Malayalam-Hindi), and Girls will be Girls (Hindi-English) are six of the names on this list are Indian films.
Fans are thrilled, but most internet users are curious as to why the box office failure Kanguva got it to this prestigious list.
Nominations for the 97th Academy Awards will be announced on January 17 after voting ends on Sunday (January 12).
The ceremony will take place on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.
