Supreme Court seeks reply from Central Government, gave 4 weeks time

The Supreme Court has given the central government four weeks to express its stand on the petition seeking recognition of Ram Setu as a historical monument. The Supreme Court asked the Center to file an affidavit on the petition within four weeks. After this, the counter affidavit will be filed in two weeks. However, the petitioner Subramanian Swamy raised the question that the matter has been stuck for many years. The government has to tell that whether it wants to declare Ram Setu as a historical monument or not. The Supreme Court had also asked the Center to clarify its stand by filing an affidavit. Subramanian Swamy raised the issue of Ram Sethu in the Supreme Court. In the year 2018, he had mentioned the petition in the Supreme Court to declare Ram Setu as a national heritage. In this, he had said that the court had issued a notice to the central government on this. It has been so many years but the government has not yet filed a reply to the petition. However, the central government has already clarified its stand on the Ram Setu issue. The government, by filing its affidavit in the Supreme Court, had said about the Setu Samudram project and Ram Setu that no damage would be done to the Ram Setu for the proposed Setu Samudram project to facilitate the movement of ships at sea. The government will explore some other alternative route for the project. Swamy has said in his petition that Ram Setu is associated with the faith of lakhs of Hindus. It should not be broken and Ram Setu should be declared a national heritage.

Earlier the NDA government, in an affidavit filed in September 2019, told a bench headed by then Chief Justice Dipak Misra that it was looking into the "socio-economic loss" of the project and without damaging the 'Ram Setu' shipping channel project.
