Supreme Court CJI: Chief Justice UU Lalit to retire next month
Justice UU Lalit has inherited the knowledge of law and justice from his family. Justice Lalit's grandfather Ranganath Lalit was a well-known lawyer. This journey in the field of justice was taken a step further by his son RU Lalit and he was appointed judge of Bombay High Court from lawyer. Justice UU Lalit was the third generation lawyer in his family, then became a judge of the Supreme Court and has now reached the post of Chief Justice of the country.

The central government has written to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Uday Umesh Lalit, asking him to nominate his successor. According to sources, the central government has sent a letter to the CJI on Friday morning itself. Let us tell you that Justice Uday Umesh Lalit is retiring on November 8. Justice DY Chandrachud is the senior-most judge after the CGI and the main contender for the post. The Chief Justice nominates the senior-most judge as his successor. According to this convention, Justice Chandrachud could be the 50th Chief Justice of the country.
Earlier on August 27, Justice UU Lalit was sworn in as the 49th Chief Justice of the country. He was administered the oath of office and secrecy by President Draupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Justice Uday Umesh Lalit replaces Justice NV Ramana, who retired as Chief Justice yesterday, on 26 August.
Justice Uday Umesh Lalit is considered a specialist in Criminal Law. He was directly elevated as a Supreme Court Judge from the Bar on 13 August 2014. He was then appointed as the acting chairman of the National Legal Services Authority in May 2021. He has participated in trials as Public Prosecutor of CBI in all 2G cases under the orders of Supreme Court. He has also served as a member of the Legal Services Committee of the Supreme Court for two terms.
