Supreme Court bans local body elections with OBC reservation in UP for the time being

At present, the Supreme Court has put a stay on the local body elections in Uttar Pradesh with the provision of OBC reservation. The court has said that a special committee should be formed for the functioning of the bodies whose term has been completed. The UP government had asked for three months' time to form a commission and give the report of the triple test. The Supreme Court said, the time of three months is more. In the case of local body elections in UP, the UP government said in the Supreme Court that it will complete the process of delimitation in the state in three months. The Supreme Court said that the time of three months is too long.

The UP government said that the judge who has been appointed as the chairman of the commission will have to ask and tell that in what minimum time it can be completed? This type of process has been adopted in many states including Madhya Pradesh. However, the SG, citing the judgement, said that apart from the admin, the work can be continued by forming a committee of 3 members for three months. The Supreme Court stayed the decision of the High Court to hold elections till January. The Supreme Court issued notice to the other party. A reply has been sought on the notice in three weeks.
