The remarks come at a time when nationwide protests against the Sri Lankan government have intensified in the past few days. There has been a situation like civil war. This has resulted in an increase in the incidents of clashes with the security forces deployed at the protest sites.

Responding to media queries on developments in Sri Lanka, Official Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that as a close neighbor of Sri Lanka, India fully supports democracy, stability and economic recovery with historical ties.

The slowdown in Sri Lanka is attributed to the decline in tourism during the COVID pandemic, as well as a lack of foreign exchange due to reckless economic policies, such as the government's move last year to make Sri Lanka's agriculture 100 percent organic with chemical fertilizers. Steps were taken to ban Sri Lanka recently defaulted around USD 51 billion in its entire external debt due to acute shortage of foreign exchange.
