Special police team in North East Delhi arrested snatching syndicate, recovered 41 mobile phones

A special team of North East Delhi Police arrested two former associates of the Nanhe gang, who were running a snatching syndicate. The team has recovered 41 stolen mobile phones and two two-wheelers.

“In pursuance of pragmatic strategy against street crime under the ongoing “Operation Ankush” and in order to tab on the street crime especially snatching of mobile phones in the area of North East District, a dedicated police team of Spl Staff/NED comprising SI Akhil, ASI jaibeer, HC Anil, HC Irfan, HC Sachin, Const. Sarvan, Const. Deepak, Const. Nitin and Const. Rajesh under the supervision of Inspr. Vikas Kumar Buldak IC/Spl. Staff had been developing information regarding active snatchers in the area of North East District,” Sanjay Kumar Sain, DCP, North East District, said.

On February, 19, information regarding the presence of dreaded snatchers with a huge consignment of stolen mobile phones was received. The same was verified from reliable sources and accordingly, a trap was laid near Picnic Hut Park, Jyoti Nagar.

At around 7:20 in the evening, two persons riding on a white colour Activa scooty without registration plate were signalled to stop but they, noticing the police presence, sped up in a bid to escape. After a slight chase and brief scuffle police team successfully nabbed both of them.

On asking the documents related to the ownership of the scooty, they couldn’t provide them. Meanwhile, a bag held by the pillion was checked. On examination 41 used mobile phones of different make and models were found stacked up in the bag, for which they tried to bluff the police team and couldn’t reply satisfactorily.

Accordingly, they were apprehended and interrogated at length. During interrogation, their identities were established as Javed and Mohd. Hasim. On checking, the scooty they were riding was found stolen.

They confessed to their crime and revealed that they used to snatch the mobile phones from the persons on lone stretches in the area of Shastri Park and Signature Bridge. They further disclosed their involvement in various criminal cases.

On sustained interrogation, it surfaced that Javed is BC of PS Welcome, previously involved in 18 cases of Robbery, Snatching, Arms Act. In his disclosure, Mohd. Hasim revealed that he had been an associate of Gangster Nanhe (who had been murdered in gang war) and he along with Javed had earlier been jailed with Nanhe in a murder case.

They further disclosed that they used to sell the snatched mobile phones to Arif, a resident of Jafrabad. Sincere efforts are on to apprehend the receiver of stolen mobile phones and connect the recovered mobile phones with the cases. Further investigation into the case is in progress.
