Raja's remains were found on June 2, shortly after he and Sonam embarked on their honeymoon on May 20. What initially seemed like an accidental death quickly escalated into a murder investigation when a machete, believed to be the murder weapon, was uncovered.
The discovery of Raja's body triggered a widespread search for Sonam, who her family and in-laws initially feared had been kidnapped. The couple had traveled from Indore in Madhya Pradesh to Shillong in Meghalaya, but by May 23, they were reported missing. After more than two weeks of searching, Sonam was located at a roadside eatery, or ‘dhaba,’ in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, which is over 1,200 kilometers away from where they were last seen.
