India’s New Test Captain: Amid speculation and several contenders, it is now almost confirmed—according to media reports, that Shubman Gill will take over as the new Test captain.
The BCCI is expected to make an official announcement soon, possibly during a press conference. Gill has reportedly met head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar to discuss India’s roadmap in red-ball cricket.
If confirmed, this will be Gill's first assignment as India’s Test captain. However, he brings prior leadership experience—having captained India in T20s during a tour of Zimbabwe, and currently leading Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025, where the team is performing impressively under his captaincy.

As per reports, the Indian squad for the England tour will be selected on 23 or 24 May, and that is when the BCCI may officially unveil Gill as the new captain.
The 23-year-old has already met a few members of the Indian team management in this regard. The youngster is already the vice-captain in both the white-ball formats. He also has captaincy experience in the IPL, having led the Gujarat Titans since 2024.

The sudden announcement left a captaincy vacuum with a crucial away series coming up. While most experts reckoned Jasprit Bumrah, the vice-captain, who had led India to their solitary win in Australia last November, would replace Rohit, the selectors are reportedly backing Gill for the role.
BCCI sources also informed the national daily that the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee will meet in Mumbai on the same day to pick the Indian squad for the England series, Gill's first captaincy assignment.
