Seven Dead in Gujarat’s Surat as Six-Storey Building Collapses, Many Feared Trapped

Seven  Dead in Gujarat’s Surat as Six-Storey Building Collapses, Many Feared Trapped

The incident took place because of several days of incessant rain, the six-story building collapsed in Gujrat Surat, Sachin Pali village on Saturday afternoon. Seven were found dead, and 15 others were injured. On Sunday, officials found out that a few are still trapped under the rubble, and rescue operations are still running.

“We have recovered seven dead bodies so far. All the deceased have been identified. They were mostly workers employed in the textile industry,” police inspector J R Chaudhary told HT on Sunday.

The building, which collapsed, was approximately eight years old. It has 30 apartments, of which 5 were occupied mostly the flats were vacant, and five families were inside the building when it collapsed. The eyewitness describes that it was horrifying to watch this huge disaster, which happened in a few seconds.

The team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and fire officials were rushed immediately to operate the rescue operation, Workers were sifting through a mountain of concrete in search of any survivors, at the site when the incident was reported on Saturday at 3 pm.

Some of the reports indicate that one of the women was rescued from the rubble, while others were still feared to be trapped. A search and rescue operation is still in the process. Statement of Rajesh Parmar, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) (Zone 6), that there were approximately four to five people who were still trapped inside.

After this incident, people are raising questions about the safety of the area. A search is still in progress to find the reason why the building collapsed.
