The Supreme Court has allowed Republic TV editor Arnab Goswami to walk out of prison. He along with two others - Niteish Sarda and Feroz Shaikh - was arrested on November 3 by the Mumbai police in a case of abetment to suicide in 2018.
The police had closed the case after it didn’t find sufficient evidence to proceed. However, after the victim’s daughter complained to the government, the police started the re-investigation and made the arrest.
Goswami had filed an interim bail application in the Mumbai High Court but the court turned down his request for release and asked him to approach session court in due course. However, the Supreme Court has held that the High Court was in error in rejecting the applications for the grant of interim bail.
“We accordingly order and direct that Arnab Manoranjan Goswami, Feroz Mohammad Shaikh and Neetish Sarda shall be released on interim bail, subject to each of them executing a personal bond in the amount of Rs 50,000 to be executed before the Jail Superintendent,” the apex court said.
It added, “They are, however, directed to cooperate in the investigation and shall not make any attempt to interfere with the ongoing investigation or with the witnesses.”
