Sant Shivamurthy Sharanaru of Karnataka has been arrested for sexual abuse. The students of Murugha Math were shifted to a government hostel here after a case was registered against Mahant Sharanaru of an influential mutt in Karnataka's Chitradurga district under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO).

After this controversy came to the fore, many parents took their children to their homes. Police department sources said charges were also filed against Mahant on Tuesday under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act as a Dalit girl was also among the victims.

He said that a case was registered under the SC/ST Act after protests by Dalit organizations on Tuesday demanding immediate arrest of Mahant. It is understood that the police team has been continuously visiting the monastery and hostel since the matter came to light.

Meanwhile, Sharanaru has claimed that the allegations leveled against him are part of a long-running conspiracy. He expressed confidence that he would come out clean in the matter. He also said that he is law-abiding and will cooperate in the investigation.

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has sought an inquiry report from the Karnataka Police into the allegations of sexual harassment against Mahant. According to media reports, two minor girls, who accused Mahant of sexual harassment, have recorded their statements before a magistrate on Tuesday.
