S Jaishankar meets Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlet Kavusoglu, discusses Cyprus issue

External Affairs Minister of India S Jaishankar discussed the issue of Cyprus with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlet Kavusoglu. In fact, the President of Turkey raised the issue of Kashmir in his address to the United Nations General Assembly, after which the Foreign Minister discussed the issue of Cyprus with Kavusoglu. The two foreign ministers met here on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session. Jaishankar tweeted on Tuesday, "Met on the sidelines of UNGA with Foreign Minister of Turkey Mevlet Kavusoglu. During this, the issues of Ukraine war, food security, G20, global order, NAM and Cyprus were discussed.

The Cyprus problem began in 1974 when Turkey invaded the northern part of the country in response to a military coup. The government of Greece supported the coup, India has been advocating for a peaceful solution in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations. Turkish President Rajab Tayyip Erdogan raised the issue of Kashmir in his address to the United Nations General Assembly session. Erdogan, a close aide of Pakistan, said during the General Assembly discussion, "India and Pakistan have not been able to establish peace and unity among themselves even after establishing their sovereignty and independence 75 years ago. This is very unfortunate. We wish lasting peace and prosperity in Kashmir."

In recent years, Erdoan has referred to the Kashmir issue during his address to high-level sessions of the UN General Assembly, which has led to tensions in relations between India and Turkey. India has in the past termed his remarks as "completely unacceptable". India has been saying that Turkey should learn to respect the sovereignty of other countries and reflect this more deeply in its policies. Jaishankar also met Libyan Foreign Minister Najila Ilmangoush.
