Rohit Sharma Reveals Future Plans After Dismissing Retirement Rumours: ‘I Will or Won’t Play 2027…’
Rohit Sharma rubbed out all speculation regarding his retirement and confirmed he will continue to play ODIs for India.

Rohit Sharma Reveals Future Plans After Dismissing Retirement Rumours: Rohit Sharma winners with a highly memorable ICC Champions Trophy for the year 2025 and thus laid rest to all his retirement news. Did he confirm his intent to play ODIs for India? He avoided this during the long press conference. But, just before leaving the chair, the India captain confirmed that he isn't retiring.
"One more thing. I am not going to retire from this format. Just to make sure there are no rumours spread moving forward. Thank you so much," Rohit said.

The announcement was not surprising. Even though there had been rumours regarding March 9, 2025, being the last day of Rohit as an active Indian cricketer, retirement itself still seems some time away for the 38-year-old Rohit. Speculation around his future first arose during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy when Rohit opted for self-rest. Reports were doing rounds that Rohit retirement was anyway a matter of time ever since the end of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. But here we are three months down the line, with Rohit gearing up to carry on.
One of the questions asked by the press at one point concerned what the future holds for him. That his reaction was assumed to have been tight-lipped for the 'R' word. But then about ten minutes afterwards, he cleared the air.
"Abhi dekhte hai (Let's see). Winning two ICC trophies is a big achievement. Going undefeated is icing on the cake. I have seen very few teams who have won two tournaments undefeated. It was important for us to come here and prepare well. We utilised the conditions well. There are no future plans. What is going on currently will continue to go on ahead."

What next for Rohit Sharma
Rohit declared that he would remain committed to playing ODIs in the coming years, while whether he would be fit for captaincy in the 2027 World Cup, to be held in South Africa, is yet to be seen. The captaincy of Rohit has replicated that of MS Dhoni in that Rohit has won multiple ICC tournaments. In fact, Rohit has surpassed Dhoni in the last nine months by leading India to glory in the T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy. Had Australia not spoiled India's party on the evening of November 19, Rohit would have gone on to win all three top ICC titles in less than two years.
This is the passing of the old guard, which now demands serious contemplation. As long as Rohit continues to play the right runs - certainly, he played a match-saving 76 to give India a great start for 252 in the final - he can call it quits at the right time and hand over the captaincy to Shubman Gill, his present deputy. If at all Rohit plays in the 2027 World Cup in two years, he will be turning 40 years and will most likely not go as India's captain to South Africa.
