Rishi Sunak Marches Ahead for Britain's Prime Minister's Post, Garners Necessary support for Nomination

Former UK Finance Minister Rishi Sunak marched ahead on an optimistic note and went one step ahead in the direction of strengthening his claim for the post of Britain's Prime Minister. The former Finance Minister, who resigned a few days back from that post, has become one of the first candidates for the post of Prime Minister, and leader of the Conservative Party to surpass the support limit of 20 Conservative Party members of parliament. fo Apart from Sunak, two more leaders of Indian origin are said to be in the race for the post of British PM.

Sunak announced he'll be contesting for the post of Prime Minister on the 8th of July, which received mixed opinions from the public. Earlier, promising he'd fight for the equal rights of women, he took to Twitter and wrote, "If I become Prime Minister I will protect women’s rights and ensure women and girls enjoy the same freedom most males take for granted in feeling safe from assault and abuse."

Sunak, a 42-year-old British Indian MP from Richmond, Yorkshire, is expected to be ahead in the race as nominations formally begin to elect a new prime minister to replace Boris Johnson. Leaders filing nominations for the post have time till 6 pm local time to file nominations. In the race are Indian-origin Attorney General Suella Braverman, Foreign Minister Liz Truss, Nigerian-born Kemi Badenoch, former Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt, Transport Minister Grant Shepps, Foreign Office official Rahman Chishti, and former Health Minister Sajid Javid.

Indian-origin Home Minister Priti Patel is said to be considering joining the race and may file her nomination till the last minute with the Conservative Party's strong support for Brexit. Britain's new prime minister will be elected on 5 September and will face the prime minister's initial questions in parliament on 7 September. The first phase of voting by Tory lawmakers is to take place on Wednesday. The last two candidates will be selected in a phased manner after the second phase of polling on Thursday.
