Retired Justice Desai became the first woman President of the Press Council of India
Earlier, Justice Chandramouli Kumar Prasad (Retd) was the PCI President. The post was lying vacant after completing his term and demitting office in November last year. Now Justice Ranjana Desai has been appointed on this.

Retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai on Friday became the chairperson of the Press Council of India (PCI). She is the first woman to be appointed to this position. The government formally announced his name. A gazette notification was issued in this regard by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The appointment of 72-year-old Desai was cleared by a committee on Tuesday. The committee included Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and PCI member Prakash Dubey.

Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai was born on 30 October 1949. He passed his Bachelor of Arts from Elphinstone College Mumbai in 1970 and Bachelor of Law from Government Law College, Mumbai in 1973. She has been a former judge of the Supreme Court. She was appointed to this post on 13 September 2011. Apart from this, 72-year-old Justice Desai is a former judge of the Bombay High Court. Justice Ranjana Desai recently headed the Delimitation Commission on Jammu and Kashmir. Which was established to recreate the assembly constituencies of the Union Territory.
