Raise 75 unicorns in 75 weeks to 75th Anniversary of Independence: Commerce Minister

The Minister of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Piyush Goyal has asked the Indian Industry to raise at least 75 unicorns in 75 weeks to the 75th anniversary of Independence in 2023.

Unicorns are those start-up firms that are valued at more than a billion dollars. They typically belong to the software or technology sector.

Goyal said this while releasing the NASSCOM Tech Start-up Report 2022. He said, “We have added 43 unicorns added in 45 weeks, since the start of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ on 12th March 2021. Let us aim for at least 75 unicorns in this 75 week period to 75th Anniversary of Independence.”

He added, “India has now become the hallmark of a trailblazer & is leaving its mark on global startup landscape. Investments received by Indian startups overshadowed pre-pandemic highs. 2021 will be remembered as the year Indian start-ups delivered on their promise, - fearlessly chasing opportunities across verticals - Edtech, HealthTech & AgriTech amongst others.”

Goyal also hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to celebrate January 16 as National Startup Day. He said that it shows the Prime Minister’s vision and commitment to take innovation to every part of the country.

Goyal said, “We all celebrated this innovation spirit through Startup India Innovation Week, during the last week as part of 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’. PM’s interaction with Startups a week ago has supercharged the courage of our innovators.”
