A spokesman said that the plane was carrying more than 100 passengers from New Zealand. Ambulance services were prepared at Sydney Airport following an emergency call from a Qantas plane.

An ambulance service spokeswoman said about QF144 flying from Auckland, "Paramedics were called." Whereas Australia's Channel Nine Television News said that there were 'reports of engine failure'.

The Boeing 737-800 is a twin-engine aircraft and is capable of landing safely with just one engine. According to the Australian government's aviation regulator, a Mayday call indicates that an aircraft is in serious danger and requires immediate assistance.
