Tariff Hike on Chinese Goods: The administration of President Donald Trump has imposed a sweeping new tariff of up to 245 per cent on Chinese imports, significantly escalating the ongoing trade tensions between Washington and Beijing. The measure, outlined in a White House fact sheet released late Tuesday, is a direct response to China’s recent export curbs and retaliatory tariff hikes.

“In response to China’s retaliatory actions, imports from China now face tariffs as high as 245 per cent,” the White House stated, describing the move as part of Trump's continued "America First Trade Policy."

The US accused China of deliberately limiting the export of critical high-tech materials, such as gallium, germanium and antimony, which are vital to industries including aerospace, defence and semiconductors. China recently halted exports of six heavy rare earth elements and rare earth magnets, further tightening its grip on components key to global supply chains.

“Months ago, China restricted exports of gallium, germanium, antimony, and other strategic materials,” the statement said. “This week, it added six heavy rare earth metals and magnets to the list—materials essential to global industries like automotive, aerospace, semiconductors, and defence.”

According to the White House, over 75 countries have expressed interest in new trade agreements, prompting the administration to hold off on raising tariffs on non-Chinese goods during discussions. “These heightened tariffs are currently focused solely on China due to its retaliatory measures,” the administration noted.

In addition, the Trump administration has launched a national security probe into US dependence on imported strategic materials, highlighting growing concerns over the nation's reliance on foreign sources for critical resources used in high-tech and defence sectors.

President Trump, who has made trade reform a central theme of his second term, positioned the tariff hike as part of his broader effort to shield American industries and safeguard critical supply chains.

“From Day One, President Trump has pursued his America First Trade Policy to restore economic strength and national resilience,” the statement said.

Although the White House has not yet released a detailed list of affected goods, experts believe the elevated tariffs could impact a broad spectrum of both industrial and consumer products.
