On November 25, the Argentinian football legend suffered a heart attack at the age of 60 at home. He had undergone surgery just a fortnight ago and was recovering. The news has shocked fans across the globe.
"Throughout his career, he gave us some of the best sporting moments on the football field. His untimely demise has saddened us all. May his soul rest in peace," PM said in a tweet.
Kiren Rijiju, Minister of State for Youth Affairs & Sports, said that there would be no another Maradona born again.
"He is the first Football Superstar we saw live in television. I couldn't see the live game of great Pele and mesmerizing Garrincha playing but I'm extremely lucky to see the live magic of MARADONA!," the Minister said.
Many other Indian celebrities including cricketers and film stars have paid their tributes on their respective Twitter handles.
"RIP Diego Maradona. He changed the way the beautiful game of football is played. True genius," Virat Kohli wrote.
Cricketer Ajinkya Rahane said, "Shocked to learn of this news. The world has lost a legend in Diego Maradona. My heartfelt condolences to his friends and family."
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan said, “Diego Maradona....you made football even more beautiful. You will be sorely missed and may you entertain and enthral heaven as you did this world. RIP....”
