PM Modi inaugurates Chess Olympiad in Chennai, Pakistan withdraws at last minute
Shortly before the inauguration, Pakistan took a big decision saying that it would not play in this tournament. His players had reached Chennai, but he decided to withdraw at the last minute.

The 44th Chess Olympiad started in Chennai on Thursday (July 28). It was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During this, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister AK Stalin and veteran actor Rajinikanth were present at the ceremony. Stalin welcomed the Prime Minister with a memento. Veteran chess player Viswanathan Anand handed over the Chess Olympiad torch to the Prime Minister.
In the program, Prime Minister Modi said, "Tamil Nadu has many temples with beautiful sculptures that represent different sports. Tamil Nadu has a deep historical connection with chess. The state has produced many chess masters. It is home to a vibrant culture and the oldest language 'Tamil'.
Sports Minister Anurag Thakur said, "India is the land where chess originated. Exactly a month ago we celebrated torch relay for the first time in Delhi. Chess tournament is going to start from today. Sports in India are getting stronger day by day.
