PM Modi and Putin Agree on Releasing Indians Recruited by Russian Army
PM Modi met President Putin on Monday at the President's House. Punit arranged a private dinner for Modi at his dacha (country house).

Russia admitted to the discharge of the Indians who were recruited by the Russian army and decided to facilitate the return of all Indians working in the Russian Army, sources told ANI. This issue is raised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

Meet-and-greet PM Modi and President Putin in Moscow

In Moscow, PM Modi met President Putin on Monday at the President's House. The meeting began with warm rapport Putin welcomed Modi with a hug. Punit arranged a private dinner for Modi at his dacha (country house). In a private dinner, they continued having a discussion on the ongoing situation in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

PM Modi said, "Gratitude to President Putin for hosting me at Novo-Ogaryovo this evening. Looking forward to our talks tomorrow as well, which will surely go a long way in further cementing the bonds of friendship between India and Russia." In a post on X.

TASS quoted Putin as saying, “Our official talks are tomorrow, while today, in this comfortable, cosy setting, we can probably discuss the same issues, but unofficially.” There were many individuals from India, tempted by Russia's remunerative education and opportunities, who were impelled to join the Russian Army and participate in the fight against Ukraine when it erupted in February 2022.

Indians in the Russian Army

According to certain media sources, the Russian military recruited Indians to work as security assistants. These individuals were pressured to join Russian soldiers in combat.

In June, there was a report by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) that claimed that at least four Indian individuals, including a man who was a 30-year-old resident of Hyderabad and was serving in the Russian Army, found dead in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The MEA also reported that of the Indian nationals working as support staff in the Russian Army, ten had returned to India, in April.

Concerns raised by the opposition

The issue was raised by Congress RS MP Jairam Ramesh from the opposition party with a series of questions to PM Modi, "According to the Indian Embassy in Moscow, at least 50 Indian nationals have joined the Russian Army. At least two individuals have already been confirmed as fatalities of the war. Many others have been 'duped' into fighting a war where they have no stake, aside from a chance to escape the poverty and unemployment crisis that the non-biological Prime Minister has perpetuated domestically. Will the non-biological Prime Minister take up the cause of these youth? Will he ensure their safe return to India as soon as possible?”
