The situation is tense but calm after violent clashes in a village on the Assam-Meghalaya border in the early hours of Tuesday. A senior official said on Thursday that a large number of security personnel have been deployed in the area following the death of six persons in violent clashes. The Meghalaya government has suspended mobile internet services in at least seven Khasi-Jaintia Hills districts in the eastern part of the state till Saturday. Home Department Secretary CVD Dengdoh told 'PTI-Bhasha', "Mobile internet and data services are suspended for 48 hours to prevent misuse of social media to disturb peace and to maintain law and order."
Mobile internet services were suspended in seven districts within hours of the outbreak of violence on Tuesday. Six people, including a forest guard, were killed in violence at a disputed site in West Karbi Anglong district along the Assam-Meghalaya border in the early hours of Tuesday. The clash took place when a truck carrying illegally cut timber was stopped by Assam forest officials. After a series of attacks on passenger cars following the incident, the Assam government has stopped vehicles from plying to Meghalaya.
