Prompt and alert response from the patrolling party of the North–East district of Delhi Police solved a case in which two youngsters impersonated as police personnel and looted a truck driver.
On the intervening night of January 16 and 17, around 11.45 PM, a PCR call regarding robbery from a truck driver by two youth persons who were in SCORPIO Car and impersonating themselves as Police personnel was reported in Bhajanpura Police Station. Immediately, Sub Inspector Pankaj along with his team reached on the spot.
The truck driver Hareram Paswan, the victim, in this case, stated that when he, along with his two labourers was driving his Tata 407 No. DL-1LAB-2330 from Brijpuri to Seelampura, around 11.30 PM, and when they reached near Gokapuri flyover, a black SCORPIO using police siren overtook his truck and stopped just in front of his truck.
Two youth persons came out of the car and one of them came to him while the other went towards the conductor side. They said that they are police officers and pushed him out of the truck, slapped 2-3 times, and asked about the document of the vehicle and his driving licence.
The person took out his DL, RC of the vehicle, Aadhar Card and Rs. 500/- from his pocket at gunpoint. He further asked to take the vehicle to Bhajanpura police station and got his associate to sit in the vehicle.
His associates sat in the vehicle forcefully and on his direction, he started moving behind the SCORPIO towards Yamuna Vihar. In the meanwhile, a PCR vehicle blowing siren was seen coming from another side. Seeing that, the person driving SCORPIO stopped the car and his friend got out of the truck and sat in the SCORPIO and fled from the spot.
Immediately, the truck driver made a PCR call using the mobile phone of his companion and intimated about the robbery committed by him and the registration number of the SCORPIO, which he had noted.
As per standard practice, immediately, on receipt of PCR call, a wireless message was flashed by the control room to all patrolling vehicles and officers to alert them and to trace the SCORPIO in question. On receipt of the message, the patrolling vehicle immediately swung into action and Assistant Sub-Inspector Harender and Constable Sachin who were performing duty in the PCR vehicle responded to the call, contacted the caller and found the truck-bearing no. DL1LAB2330, at C- Block Yamuna Vihar but that Scorpio car was not found there.
As alerted by District Control Room, all patrol vehicles were rigorously tracing the defaulting vehicles i.e. SCORPIO.
Inspector Vinod Ahlawat and other patrolling vehicles were on group patrolling in the area. After sincere efforts, they intercepted the black Scorpio car at 4th Pusta, towards Shastri Park at a lonely place along with the driver who was later identified as Hariom Sagar.
At that time, he was attempting to rob another vehicle. Seeing police vehicles, he tried to run away from the spot, but the alertness of police staff and their courageous efforts averted his plan and he was apprehended along with the car. On his cursory search, one country-made pistol along with three (03) live cartridges were recovered from this possession.
A case was registered under relevant sections at Bhajanpura police station in the incident and the investigation was taken up.
During sustained interrogation, Hariom Sagar disclosed about his associates Piyush Kumar S/o Sanjay Kumar, who is his cousin brother and on his instance, Piyush was traced and arrested.
They both confessed their crime and disclosed that they have a fascination with being police officers. They had fitted a police siren in the SCORPIO CAR, which is registered in the name of Hariom Sagar just to satisfy their fascination and to impress others.
This case is the perfect example of standard practice to be adopted in cases of vehicle jacking, where the presence of patrolling vehicles in the area not only deterred the offenders but instilled a sense of confidence in the truck driver so that he could make a PCR call.
“Dedicate and collective efforts of the district police staff ensured arrest of offenders and recovery of robbed items and that when the offender was attempting to commit another robbery,” Sanjay Kumar Sain, DCP, North- East District, said.
“For their alertness and sincere effort, the concerned officers have been selected out best responder and heroes of the week, the flagship initiatives of North-East District for recognition of their efforts and motivation as well,” he added.
