Netanyahu’s ‘Personal Loss’ Remark Amid Iran War Sparks Outrage and Backlash

Netanyahu’s ‘Personal Loss’: As missiles hit Israeli cities and hospitals reel under Iranian strikes, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing sharp criticism—not for a military decision, but for a personal remark that many Israelis say is deeply out of touch.
The controversy erupted after Netanyahu, speaking outside Soroka Hospital in Be'er Sheva—damaged in an Iranian missile strike—invoked the WWII Blitz to describe Israel’s current crisis. "We are going through a Blitz," he said, urging resilience in the face of escalating conflict.
He described the delay of his son’s wedding as a “personal cost” of the war with Iran. Many Israelis called the comment tone-deaf and self-centered, according to The Guardian.
Netanyahu claimed that all Israelis were bearing "a personal cost," saying his family was no exception and lamenting the fact that his son had to cancel his wedding twice now due to Iranian missiles.

Avner’s wedding was initially set for November but was postponed over security concerns. It had been rescheduled for this Monday, despite anticipated opposition protests.
To connect with the public, Netanyahu shared his own family’s struggles. He mentioned that his son Avner’s wedding had been postponed for a second time due to security threats. He said the situation had affected not only his son but also his son’s fiancée and his wife, Sara. “There are people who were killed, families who grieved loved ones, I really appreciate that,” Netanyahu said. “Each of us bears a personal cost, and my family has not been exempt.” He also praised his wife, saying, “Sara is a hero.”
The remark has since triggered widespread criticism, with many questioning the appropriateness of discussing a wedding delay while families mourn loved ones lost in the conflict.
Journalist Amir Tibon added that, unlike other public figures who’ve lost children in war, Netanyahu remains self-centered even when leadership and humility are most needed.

According to Tibon, “Even in moments when a personal example is most needed, he is first and foremost concerned with himself.”
Netanyahu’s comments came just hours after Soroka Hospital sustained significant damage in Beersheba. Iranian missiles struck multiple departments, including the ophthalmology unit, causing chaos and injuries in a facility already overwhelmed by wartime casualties.
In response, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz pointed fingers squarely at Tehran. He blamed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and declared that the Israeli military "has been instructed and knows that in order to achieve all of its goals, this man absolutely should not continue to exist.”
The latest barrage of strikes follows Israel's own offensive against nuclear targets in Iran. As the air war entered its second week, European officials urged Tehran to return to negotiations. Meanwhile, the White House has said that US President Donald Trump will decide within two weeks whether to intervene militarily in support of Israel.
