Navratri Day 6: We are at the peak of Navratri, each Navadurga’s story presents us with inspiring lore that walks the line between quiet persistence and fiery determination. Maa Katyayani’s story, the sixth of the Navadurgas, is no different.
Riding a lion, recurring details in Her iconography show Her in varada mudra and abhaya mudra which means bestowing boons and removal of fear, benevolence and protection respectively, the perfect metaphor for Her story.

Maa Katyayani is energy. She was born out of the collective energy of all the Gods, born out of their intense frustration against the demon Mahishasura as per Vamana Purana. The origin of her name as per Kalika Purana is attributed to Katyayana Rishi who was the first to worship Her — hence She became the daughter of Katyayana Rishi, Maa Katyayani.
According to the legend Raktabija was blessed with the power that every drop of blood that will be spilled will be born a new demon. This was making it impossible for Bhairava to kill him.
This is where Maa Katyayani came in. She swallowed Raktabija’s blood without any drop spilling and simultaneously created an Amrit Kund for Bhairava’s army, both of which proved to be a turning point in the war.

Spiritually Maa Katyayani also presides over the Ajna chakra or the third eye chakra which is associated with intuition, clarity and spiritual consciousness.
As per Hindu Scriptures there was a sage named Katyayan and he was childless so he strictly penanced to please Maa Parvati and Goddess pleased by seeing his devotion so after asking about the boon he replied that he wanted her to become his daughter and requested the Goddess to take birth as his daughter.
Maa Parvati blessed him with the wish fulfillment. Goddess Parvati incarnated as his daughter and that’s why she is named as Katayayani.
As per Bhagawad Purana once many young women worshipped Maa Katyayani and wish to get Lord Krishna as their husband. They made a clay idol of Maa Katyayani and worshipped them with immense devotion.
Maa Katyayani then blessed all of them with the desired wish fulfillments. So it is believed that people who are searching for the desired husband or partner must worship Maa Katyayani as she bless the devotees with their desired wishes.
