Navratri 2024 Day 6: Navratri has reached the point where Maa Durga manifests as Maa Katyayani who killed Mahishasura. This is the 6th day of Navratri and is dedicated to Maa Katayayani. This will be on Sashti Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashwina i.e., October 8, 2024. Maa Katyayani is the fierce form of Maa Durga.
Who is Maa Katyayani?
Maa Katyayani is one of the most fierce form of Maa Durga who is worshipped on the 6th day of Navratri. She was born to destroy the evil spirits from the earth. She was the one who killed Mahishasur.

All the deities gave their weapons to Maa Durga to honour Maa Katyayani. Shiva gave his Trishul, Vishnu gave his Sudarshan Chakra, Varuna gave her conch shell, Vayu gave his bow and arrow to Maa, Brahma gave her rosary and water pot to Maa Durga. Vishwakarma also gave many weapons to Maa Durga.
Maa Katyayani is also known as the warrior Goddess who is full of power, strength, energy and who fights against all the evil spirits and eventually killed the demon Mahishasur by beheading him with the sword and that’s why she is popularly known as Mahishasur Mardini.
Goddess Katyayani has four hands, holding a sword, lotus flower in two hands, and other hand is in the form of Abhaya Mudra and rides on a lion and she shines like thousands of Sun. Maa Katyayani is the ruler of Brihaspati or Jupiter. Maa Katyayani is also one of the most compassionate Goddess who bestow the devotees with wish fulfilment.
Birth Story of Maa Katyayani
As per Hindu Scriptures, there was a sage named Katyayan and he was childless so he strictly penanced to please Maa Parvati and Goddess pleased by seeing his devotion so after asking about the boon, he replied that he wanted her to become his daughter and requested the Goddess to take birth as his daughter. Maa Parvati blessed him with the wish fulfilment. Goddess Parvati incarnated as his daughter and that’s why she named as Katayayani.

Story of Maa Katyayani
As per Bhagawad Purana, once many young women worshipped Maa Katyayani and wish to get Lord Krishna as their husband. They made a clay idol of Maa Katyayani and worshipped them with immense devotion. Maa Katyayani then blessed all of them with the desired wish fulfilments. So it is believed that people, who are searching for the desired husband or partner, must worship Maa Katyayani as she bless the devotees with their desired wishes.
Navratri 2024 Day 6: Puja Vidhi
- Wake up early in the morning and take a holy bath before starting puja rituals.
- Light a diya with desi ghee in front of the idol of Maa Durga.
- Offer fresh hibiscus flowers, vermillion, fruits and offer homemade sweets.
- Offer 5 shringaar items to the Goddess - haldi, sindoor, mehendi, saree, bindi to the Goddess Katyayani and unmarried girls can wish for the desired husband or partner.
- Now light a camphor along with two cloves and offer it to the Goddess.
- Chant Goddess Durga and Maa Katyayani Mantras.
- Seek blessings and forgiveness from the divine mother.
- Break your fast after offering Bhog Prasad to the Goddess.

1. ॐ देवी कात्यायन्यै नमः॥

2. कात्यायनी महामाये , महायोगिन्यधीश्वरी। नन्दगोपसुतं देवी, पति मे कुरु ते नमः।।
