Names of five High Court judges recommended for Supreme Court judge

The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, on Tuesday recommended the names of five high court judges for appointment as apex court judges. Justice Pankaj Mithal (Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court), Justice Sanjay Karol (Chief Justice of Patna High Court), Justice PV Sanjay Kumar (Chief Justice of Manipur High Court) are among the five judges recommended for appointment as Supreme Court judges. , Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah (Judge of Patna High Court) and Justice Manoj Mishra (Judge of Allahabad High Court).

The apex court has a sanctioned strength of 34 judges, including the Chief Justice, and with the retirement of Justice S Abdul Nazeer on January 4, the number will again come down to 27. At present, nine of the 28 judges are due to retire in 2023. The Collegium usually consists of the Chief Justice and the four senior-most judges, but this has changed. It now has six members with the addition of Justice Sanjiv Khanna. Recommendation to make these three judges the Chief Justice of the High Court. The Supreme Collegium has also recommended the appointment of three High Court judges as Chief Justices.
