Myanmar Earthquake: Chinese Men Caught Stealing Documents at Bangkok Building Collapse Site

Myanmar Earthquake: The collapse of a building following last week's horrifying earthquake in Myanmar is still being investigated, during which appallingly four Chinese nationals were detained in Bangkok, Thailand for document theft related to the investigations.

People were caught illegally entering the area of a high-rise building that had collapsed under last week's powerful earthquake and were seen taking over thirty files from there, says Thai journal, The Nation.

Only that building fell in Bangkok due to the Myanmar earthquake tremors, while being part of a Chinese construction project. It collapsed mere seconds after the earthquake struck at 7.7 on the Richter scale, leaving a huge pile of rubble and crumpling into it dozens of people.

The collapse has raised serious doubts about the intended handling of the disaster site and their ulterior motives.

Police say 32 filed removed from the collapse site

Confirming the incident, Maj. Gen. Nopasin Poolswat of the Police stated that the four Chinese nationals were caught in the act of removing 32 files of documents from the collapsed State Audit Office (SAO) building.

The Bangkok authorities already defined an area for the site off-limits for anyone to enter without prior permission. Not long after, police received information that some persons were taking documents from the site.

During the investigation, it became known to the police that one of the Chinese nationals held a work permit and posed as a project manager for a building construction project.

The search for the remaining three men was commenced, culminating with the recovery of the documents, including construction plans and various other papers pertaining to the construction activities.

The authorities say that the detained insisted they were subcontractors for the construction company involved in the project.

They stated that the documents were vital for the claims process and were stored on-site in the makeshift office, Nation Thailand said.

The four men were released, but a few were charged for having entered the area of disaster in violation of the public announcement and removing sensitive documents.

Chinese firm under scrutiny

It has also drawn increasing scrutiny to the Chinese company's involvement in a series of mishaps and collapses owing to the elevated scrutiny surrounding the collapse of a Chinese company-high-rise.

Concerns were raised regarding the conduct of safety procedures on construction sites and the Handing over of sensitive information, with contractors' responsibilities regarding the emergency regulations also coming under the radar.
