Mumbai Weather Alert: Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Likely Today, CM Fadnavis Reviews Situation

Mumbai Weather Alert: Amid heavy rainfall in Mumbai, Maharashtra's Water Resources and Disaster Management Minister, Girish Mahajan, visited the Disaster Management Department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

CM Devendra Fadnavis has been closely monitoring the situation, instructing the entire administration to remain on alert. He has been in constant touch with the state Chief Secretary and the Disaster Management Cell to coordinate relief efforts.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of further thunderstorms as heavy rains and gusty winds affected Dadar, Mahim, Parel, Bandra, Kalachowki, and other parts of the city.

IMD data revealed that South Mumbai recorded extremely heavy rainfall, with over 250 mm in just 13 hours until 11 am on Monday. Nariman Point received the highest rainfall at 252 mm, followed by the BMC headquarters at 216 mm and the Colaba pumping station at 207 mm.

In addition to widespread flooding, rainwater inundated the underground Acharya Atre Chowk metro station, leading to the suspension of operations on Mumbai Metro Line 3 between Acharya Atre Chowk and Worli stations. “The incident occurred when the RCC water-retaining wall at the entry/exit collapsed due to a sudden ingress of water from an adjoining utility,” said the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation.

Suburban railway services were also disrupted. Central Railway’s spokesperson said that water had risen eight inches above the tracks between Masjid and Sandhurst Road station, halting operations on the Harbour Line.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray criticised the Mahayuti government, alleging that despite spending crores, the administration failed to prepare Mumbai’s roads, drainage, and flood response systems. “It is the scam of the BJP across Mumbai and Pune… The farmers have not been helped or supported by this government,” Thackeray told ANI. Congress leaders echoed the sentiment.

Deputy CM Eknath Shinde acknowledged the chaos, citing the early arrival of the monsoon and its impact. “We expected (the pre-monsoon) work to be completed by June 10 and planned accordingly. It is a fact that the rains have arrived early, causing chaos,” Shinde said. He also noted that drain-cleaning operations are underway and disaster management systems are on high alert.

As Mumbai battles record-breaking rainfall and its aftermath, officials urge citizens to stay safe and avoid waterlogged areas as much as possible.
