Mumbai Rain: Mumbai is currently experiencing drastic weather events as the south-west monsoon arrived earlier than expectation. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has now issued a Red Alert for Mumbai. It expects extreme heavy rain to continue falling until 08:30 on May 27.

Furthermore, we observe that today, Monday May 26, 2025, all the schools in Mumbai are open. Again, despite the IMD declaration about severe weather conditions and warnings about heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad, BMC has not shut down schools. Unless things worsen or IMD gives more red alerts, all educational schools are expected to have their normal operations, and stay open.
Not to mention, heavy rain fall has suspended direct impacts all over the city. Between 9 and 10 am at Nariman Point alone, a total of 104mm of rain was noted during a heavily down visit, while other locations in South Mumbai observed severe rain downpoint activity occurring. This has subsequently resulted in waterlogging, traffic jams, and the delay of local train services on the Central and Harbour lines. Various bus routes have also been diverted, while residents have been advised to avoid any unnecessary travel.

Parents and guardians are asked to monitor local news and announcements addressing their school operations.
Mumbai has recorded the heaviest rainfall during the month of May in 107 years, with Colaba getting 135 mm of rain in just 24 hours. It is also interesting to note that the southwest monsoon has come nearly 10 days ahead of schedule, the earliest since 1990. Residents are currently under severe weather warnings due to thunderstorms, lightning, and wind gusts of approximately 60 km/h.
Areas in Mumbai noted to experience severe waterlogging include Andheri, Dadar, Bandra, and Byculla. Areas experienced extensive traffic, as well as delays to local train services, particularly due to water accumulation on the tracks at Masjid Station on the Harbour line. Flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were also disrupted with delays, while the Acharya Atre Chowk station on Mumbai Metro Line-3 was closed due to flooding.
