MPs Suspension Case: The opposition says ‘No’ to back-channel talks to resolve the impasse

The ongoing impasse in the Rajya Sabha doesn’t seem to be ending very soon. Reports suggest that the government has offered the four opposition parties to resolve the dispute through a back-channel discussion.

However, the two parties – Indian National Congress and Trinamool Congress – have rejected the offer.

Derek O'Brien, a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal and member of the All India Trinamool Congress has informed by a tweet that it was a stunt of the government and he also alleged that the government itself doesn’t want the parliament to function and that’s the reason it is coming out with all these suggestions.

He tweeted, "Monday morning STUNT from a Govt. who do not want #Parliament to function. Govt calls leaders of the 4 Oppn parties whose 12 RS MPs have been arbitrarily suspended. Govt leaves other 10 Oppn parties out. Failed stunt. ALL OPPN clear : first revoke arbitrary suspension.”

Since the Winter Session has started on November 29, it has not been functioning properly after 12 MPs from the four opposition parties were suspended for allegedly creating problems in the smooth functioning of the house.

According to the government, their suspension is as per the norms of the Rajya Sabha and there is no question of revoking their suspension unless they tender an unconditional apology for their unruly behaviour.

On the other hand, the opposition says that the suspension is illegal and these 12 MPs will not apologise as they were trying to raise the crucial issue in the parliament.
