Monkey Man Expected to Have Grand Opening of US $15-20 Million: According to early estimates, Dev Patel's 'Monkey Man' will have a strong opening weekend, with a gross of $15 to $20 million, comparable to Keanu Reeves 'John Wick. Following its premiere at SXSW, the film was released on the big screen.
In the past 10 years, the John Wick franchise has released two more films, one web series, and there are talks about branching out with a female lead.
With a current fresh Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 93%, Monkey Man is a Patel's love letter to Bollywood and Korean action films that could surprise and overperform on the coasts.
A Netflix streaming deal turned into a Universal deal when Jordan Peele caught the movie.
This movie is designed for a large-screen auditorium. Uni acquired Monkey Man for under $10M. Previews begin Thursday at 5 p.m.
Previously scheduled for a Netflix direct-to-digital release, Monkey Man was purchased by Netflix after producer Jordan Peele saw it at a screening and felt it was meant for the big screen.
The film premiered by the Southwest Film Festival and received a standing ovation from the audience. It is Dev Patel's homage to Bollywood and Korean cinema and will be released in 27 countries on 5th.
According to reports, the film will finally release on 26th April, if it passes the censors. The film also stars Sobhita Dhulipala, Pitobash, and Sikander Kher.
The First Omen, a prequel to the 1976 hit film Omen, will clash with Monkey Man at the box office; the prequel is expected to take a US$10-$15 million opening.
