Twelve ministers resigned ahead of the cabinet reshuffle, including Ravi Shankar Prasad, Thaawarchand Gehlot, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank,' Harsh Vardhan, Prakash Javadekar, and Sadananda Gowda. Prime Minister Narendra Modi added 43 new ministers this evening as he tries to reform his administration, which has been chastised for its handling of the coronavirus outbreak, increasing prices, and widespread dissatisfaction.
Several new ministers will be added to the cabinet, as well as existing ministers who will be relocated.
Harsh Vardhan, the Union Health Minister, and Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, the Union Education Minister, are among the 12 ministers who resigned today, just hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet reshuffle.
Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and Santosh Gangwar, both ministers in the Union Cabinet, were the first to resign today.
In their resignation letters, Mr. Pokhriyal and Mr. Gangwar reportedly stated that they were resigning due to health reasons. Babul Supriyo announced his resignation as Union Minister of State for Environment in a Facebook post.
"I believe that the entire cabinet under the leadership of Narendra Modi will make its best contribution in taking the welfare policies of the government to the people with full devotion," Shah said in a tweet.
In the new Cabinet, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Ramachandra Prasad Singh, Ashwini Vasihnaw Narayan Tatu Rane, Sarbananda Sonowal, Dr. Virendra Kumar, Pashupati Kumar Paras, Kiren Rijiju, and Raj Kumar Singh have took oaths as ministers. Hardeep Singh Puri, Mansukh Mandaviya, and Bhupender Yadav were among those who took the oath of office.
“I congratulate all the colleagues who have taken oath today and wish them the very best for their ministerial tenure. We will continue working to fulfil aspirations of the people and build a strong and prosperous India. #Govt4Growth”, PM tweeted
