Mock Drill in 4 Border States Tomorrow Amid Tensions After Operation Sindoor
Following tensions related to the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, India is testing wartime capabilities and civil defence testing exercises in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir over the weekend.

A civil defence and emergency preparedness drill is scheduled to take place on a large scale in four target states in India which share an international border with Pakistan: Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir. The timing of the exercise is particularly poignant following the recent Pahalgam incident in which 26 tourists were killed in a terrorist attack, and it will catch the attention of international players as it is the first time a national scale military readiness exercise will take place in India since the 1971 war with Pakistan.

The Home Ministry had previously ordered mock civil defence drills in 244 districts throughout India on May 7th, which is the same day it launched Operation Sindoor to destroy the terrorist infrastructure across the border in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The purpose of training in this way is to assess how quickly a civil and defence apparatus would manage an emergency response to air raids, terrorist strikes, and contested wartime situations.
Aspects included within today's drill are testing air raid siren systems to see if they are properly linked up to the command structures, like an army central command over watch, along with testing blackout protocols throughout provinces and towns by turning off lights and heating systems. Specifically in areas however near to the Line of control like Uri in Kashmir, community bunkers have been made available in areas of great risk due to military transformations, As well school children in towns by the border like Arnia have already been part of evacuation drills.

Safety responses are also centred around protecting vital infrastructure like military and paramilitary installations, hospitals or medical facilities, and main avenue communication intersections. Civil defence groups will work with local authorities to instruct civilians, pupils, and clinic members about emergency SOPs, evacuation routes, and shelter locations.
Officials encourage residents of affected areas to be ready to follow and remain calm during Okay’s testing of the sirens for the suburban tests, including treating them seriously as it was designed to build the nation's civilian defence posture in light of rising tensions in the region.
