About Microsoft layoffs
According to an AP report, Microsoft began laying off approximately 6,000 employees on Tuesday or almost 3% its total workforce and its largest job layoffs in more than 2 years, as Microsoft rapidly increases spending on artificial intelligence.
Although Washington state is the company's original home, those workers were impacted the most. Microsoft informed state officials that it is eliminating 1,985 employees that are tied to its Redmond headquarters, many of whom work in the roles of software engineers or as product managers.
Microsoft told the impacted individuals and the relevant governmental agencies that the layoffs would take place across all levels, teams and geographies, and the main focus of the layoffs would be on management positions. There were even notices that went out to the employees being laid off as early as Tuesday.
The layoffs come just weeks after Microsoft reported strong sales and profits that exceeded Wall Street's expectations for the January-March quarter, a positive outcome which investors viewed as a breath of relief for a tech sector that is experiencing ongoing turmoil.
