The Congress party has got its first non-Gandhi president after 24 years. Mallikarjun Kharge defeated Shashi Tharoor by 6825 votes. Kharge got 7897 votes, while Tharoor could get only 1072 votes. 416 votes were rejected.
Immediately after the results, Tharoor congratulated Kharge and thanked those who supported him. Only then did he reach Kharge's residence in Delhi to meet him. However, his Chief Election Agent Salman Soz had alleged rigging of voting. Here, after the victory, Kharge told that he will talk to the media between 4 pm to 4.30 pm.
Rahul Gandhi also gave a statement in the press conference on the irregularities in the election. Said- The issues have been placed before Madhusudan Mistry in the Congress Election Committee and he will take a decision. Rahul had spoken of Kharge's victory in the middle of the counting of votes. When he was asked about his role in the party, he said- Ask Khargeji. Will decide now.
With the victory in this election, Kharge has become the 65th leader to become the Congress President. He is the second Dalit leader to become the Congress President. Babu Jagjivan Ram was the first Dalit leader to become the Congress President. After independence, the leadership of the party remained with the Gandhi family for 42 out of 75 years. At the same time, for 33 years, the reins of the party president remained with leaders other than the Gandhi family.
