The fire erupted in the tent city of Sector 19 of Maha Kumbh, as per police reports. As per reports, it erupted due to the explosion of some cylinder used for cooking. This took place at the Geeta Press camp, where about 200 tents and other belongings were burned to the ground. Murli, who supervises the operations at the Geeta Press camp, confirmed that one person sustained burn injuries in the fire. Emergency services were already on the scene.

"Two cylinders exploded in Sector 19 of the Maha Kumbh Mela, causing a massive fire in the camps." A police officer stated, "Firefighters are trying their best to extinguish the fire."
Photos from the site showed large clouds of thick smoke. The moment the information was received, fire service emergency vehicles were dispatched at the site and work to stop the fire was initiated. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel have also reached the scene.
The Maha Kumbh commenced on January 13 and continued till February 26. More than 77.2 million pilgrims dipped into the Sangam Triveni during the Maha Kumbh 2025 by January 18.
