A special CBI court on Thursday rejected the bail application of former West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee in connection with the School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment scam and extended his judicial custody till February 2. Chatterjee was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on July 23 last year following the recovery of huge amount of cash, jewelery and property papers from the flat of his alleged close aide Arpita Mukherjee and on September 16 by the CBI on a court order. He was taken into custody. Rejecting Chatterjee's bail plea, the special CBI court judge ordered extension of his judicial custody till February 2. Chatterjee's lawyers, while filing an application for his bail, claimed before the court that nothing has been recovered from him and there has been no progress in the investigation. CBI's counsel opposed the bail plea saying the agency is also probing the role of middlemen (agents) and releasing the former minister at this stage may hamper the investigation.
