There were 429 people on board the plane. The flight was about to land at Chennai airport when suddenly the pilot noticed from a distance of about 50 meters that the runway was filled with water. The pilot and co-pilot immediately deferred the landing of the aircraft and diverted it towards Hyderabad. This understanding of the pilot averted a major accident.
At first the passengers were surprised by the sudden decision of the pilot, but when they were informed about the entire incident, they praised the pilot of the aircraft, Captain Mohapatra and co-pilot Raja Ponnuswamy.

More than 14 people have died, while many people are also reported missing.
