Maharashtra Government Reschedules Eid-e-Milad Holiday in Mumbai from September 16
The Maharashtra government had advanced the official Eid-e-Milad holiday in Mumbai to 18 September as the community had decided to shift Eid processions with Anant Chaturdashi celebrations.

Maharashtra Government Reschedules Eid-e-Milad Holiday: Festival of Ganesh Chaturthi on September 7 has begun Ganeshotsav, the greatest festival in Mumbai and other regions of Maharashtra. In this year Anant Chaturdashi will be celebrated on September 17 which the mark the end of the Janmashtami festival.
Due to this the Maharashtra government had advanced the official Eid-e-Milad holiday in Mumbai to 18 September as the community had decided to shift Eid processions with Anant Chaturdashi celebrations.
Since the Anant Chaturdashi which marks the end of Ganesh festival was on September 17, the local Muslim community observed Eid-ul-Fitr processions on September 18 instead of September 16 as is their usual custom hence the holiday was being changed said the official release.
It also said that the local collectors can decide similar rescheduling of the Eid holiday in other districts according to their circumstances as well.
Eid-e-Milad is another form of celebration which is done to commemorate the birthday of Prophet Muhammad. The Roman Catholic tradition marks the festival on September 16 while the processions are held on September 17.

The decision to put on hold the procession of the festival of Eid in September 18 was taken after a meeting of Navi Mumbai police called in. The meeting was held with the participation of the officials from the civic body and fire department, office bearers of various ganesh mandals and Muslim clerics.
The Ganeshotsav which commenced with ‘Ganesh Chaturthi’ on September 7 is one of the most popular festivals in Mumbai as well as in many other parts of Maharashtra. The celebrations will be culminated with Anant Chaturdashi on 17 th September this year.
On the sixth day of the celebration, over 48, 000 idols of Lord Ganesh and Goddess Gauri were immersed in Mumbai. Out of 48,044 idols that were immersed in the Arabian Sea and artificial ponds in the city till 6 am on Friday, 41,154 were home-made Ganesh idols while only 535 were from ‘sarvajanik mandals’. That was stated by the officials of the BMC, who reported that 6,355 idols of the Goddess Gauri had been also immersed.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) clarified it has declared Eid-e-Milad holiday on September 18 and not on September 16 after receiving an advertisement regarding the same from the Maharashtra’s government.
"Accordingly, the Public Holiday declared on September 16, 2024 (Monday) is cancelled and the offices of the Reserve Bank of India situated in the districts of Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban shall remain closed on September 18, 2024 (Wednesday)," according to the RBI notification on September 14.
For instance, the Independence Day is celebrated on September 13 in many states so that for the next four to five days from September 13-18, they have off because of regional holidays, festivals and the weekend. As follows, all the public and private banks in India will remain closed for at least 14 days, the second and fourth Saturdays and all the Sundays of the month besides any religious festival of the particular region.
