Tesla showroom in Mumbai: Tesla is all set to open its first showroom in India and the big day is tomorrow. The much awaited launch will take place at Maker Maxity Mall in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) Mumbai.

Before the official launch, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis and State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik visited the Tesla showroom today.

The minister said, "I welcome Tesla here in Mumbai. Tesla has opened an experience centre here, and it is a statement that Tesla has arrived and it's a statement they Tesla has arrived in the right city and right state."

"It is a matter of great joy for us that Tesla has launched its first experience in India in Mumbai. Tesla is establishing a logistics and servicing system here. Four big charging stations are also being established by them. I am happy that Tesla chose Maharashtra as the state has become a leader in electric mobility. Tesla is launching its Model Y in India. Maharashtra has the most dynamic electric mobility. policy...I believe Maharashtra will be a preferred destination when they decide to do manufacturing in India," he added.

The Chief Minister also spoke about the increasing demand for electric Mobility in India and Maharashtra. He added, "We have now in India and particularly in Maharashtra, a very large and strong market for electric mobility. We are also a production hub of electric mobility now, but I believe Tesla is going to alter the whole market."

While inaugurating the Tesla Experience Centre, Fadnavis also put the spotlight on the global reputation of the company. "Tesla is not a car or a car maker; it is all about sustainability, design and innovation, for which Tesla is a testimony and I believe that is the sole reason it is loved everywhere in the world," he stated.

Last Friday, Tesla’s India focused X (formerly Twitter) handle posted a cryptic teaser with the words “Coming soon” and a graphic which indicated July 2025 as the start of Tesla in India.

Though the company is tight lipped about its plans, the teaser and the developments have generated a lot of buzz in the automotive and consumer space.

At the end of his address, the CM promised that "Mumbai and Maharashtra are going to treat Tesla well. Consider us as partners of your (Tesla) journey."

As per industry sources, Tesla has already exported its first batch of cars, which are Model Y rear wheel drive SUVs from its China factory.

Tesla India had recently acquired 24,565 square feet warehousing facility on lease in Lodha Logistics Park in Mumbai for 5 years.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk had earlier expressed interest in investing in India but then he had also said high import duties were a big barrier. But India’s new EV policy which was rolled out recently has lower import duties and other incentives for overseas EV makers which could be the reason for Tesla’s entry.

Despite all the hype, Union Minister for Heavy Industries H.D. Kumaraswamy had clarified in June that Tesla is not looking to manufacture in India at this stage.

"They want to sell their car in India. There is no further development about Tesla," Kumaraswamy had stated during a media briefing, emphasizing that the company's current focus is limited to retail operations.
