Kolkata police arrested civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, the principal suspect in the incident. In compliance with a Calcutta high court directive, the investigation transferred to the CBI. The central agency also arrested former college principal Sandeep Ghosh and Tala police station officer Abhijeet Mondal under charges of trying to destroy evidence in this case, with Ghosh himself being under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) over financial irregularities during his tenure, based on a case registered by the CBI.
The CBI has filed a chargesheet against prime accused Sanjay Roy for the rape and murder of the on-duty doctor. A Kolkata court freed Ghosh and Mondal as the agency did not file the charges against them within 90 days.
The Joint Platform of Doctors (JPD) of several doctor's associations has voiced displeasure with the slow pace of investigation and is planning to initiate a series of agitation from December last year.
