Kharge Says Modi Should Have Raised ‘Inhumane’ Treatment of Deported Indians with Trump
Kharge asserted that friendly bilateral relations between the two countries would matter, not personal friendships between the two leaders.

Kharge Says Modi Should Have Raised ‘Inhumane’: The Congress President, Mallikarjun Kharge, alleged that “Modi should have told his old friend Donald Trump that the way they have been deporting illegal Indian immigrants is inhuman and that he should not resort to such methods”. The huge incident of the deportation of 104 Indians in C-17 military aircraft with hands cuffed to leg shackles by the Trump administration for illegal entry escalated into a furore in India.
Kharge issued a statement ahead of Modi's two-day bilateral visit to the United States for his first official meeting with Trump since the latter took office on January 20. Outside Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had attended Trump's swearing-in and conferred with Secretary of State McMarco Rubio.

Treated ‘worse than garbage’
“Modi was not invited in the first place, but Jaishankar made arrangements when he went to the U.S., after which Modi received an invitation. I wonder if it will be a success,” Kharge said.
The Rajya Sabha Deputy Leader alleged that Indians deported in a military cargo plane were treated worse than garbage.

He also questioned why Modi didn't urge Trump to send those in a civilian aircraft or arrange one from India if the U.S. were unwilling to do so. Therefore, Kharge asserted that Modi's claim of being a good friend of Trump's was untrue.
“Modi himself has claimed that he has been conversing with his 'old friend' (Trump), which he says will benefit the country. But if they were indeed close friends, Modi should have asked Trump over the phone not to deport Indian migrant labourers in such a manner,” Kharge added.
The elder Congress leader pointed out that, instead, an amicable bilateral relationship between both countries should matter, not the personal friendship of the two leaders, which may not suffice for safeguarding India's interests.
“Modi speaks with confidence, but he also has a habit of lying. Hence, he will not get good results,” Kharge said.
