Karwa Chauth 2024: Karwa Chauth is one of the most famous festival celebrated by married women. This festival is very popular in northern and western parts of India. The day is all about devotion, sacrifice and love of married women for their husbands.
From sunrise to moonrise women keep a fast on this day and don’t eat or drink anything. This whole day fast ends with the moon sighting in the evening. The fasting women pray to the moon for the well being and long life of their husbands and then break the fast.
The festival has many rituals and prayers and one of them is preparation of special meal called Sargi which is prepared by mothers in law.
This year Karwa Chauth will be on October 20. As per Drik Panchang Karwa Chauth puja muhurat will be from 5:46 pm to 7:02 pm. Karwa Chauth upavasa time is from 6:25 am to 7:54 pm on October 20.

Karwa Chauth 2024: What is Sargi?
Karwa Chauth rituals start with an early morning prayer followed by pre-dawn Sargi. This is one of the most important ritual observed by married women and their mothers in law before starting the fast.
Sargi is more than just a meal, it’s a symbol of blessings and support a mother in law gives to her daughter in law on this special day. This part of Karwa Chauth ritual is very important as it provides the fasting women with all the necessary nutrition to keep them healthy and energetic throughout the day.
Traditionally, a mother in law gives Sargi along with new clothes, matching jewellery, makeup items and other accessories to her daughter in law.

For the women who are fasting, Sargi is very important part of Karwa Chauth. As part of this tradition mother in law prepares a pre-dawn meal for her daughter in law which is consumed before sunrise.
Sargi thali has food and drink along with items for solah shringar (16 adornments) and puja. This is considered as a good luck and love for her daughter in law.
And fasting on Karwa Chauth is not only for the well being and long life of the partner but also for sons, grandsons, wealth and prosperity of the family.
Karwa Chauth 2024: Rituals
A day before Karwa Chauth women apply mehndi to their feet and hands. In the early hours mother in law gives Sargi to her daughter in law. After taking a bath and first Karwa Chauth prayers Sargi is consumed and then a day long fast without food and water till moonrise.
Then married women get dressed like a bride with solah shringar and then puja. Later in the evening women worship Goddess Parvati and read Karwa Chauth vrat katha.

Once the puja is over, women wait for the moon to rise and break the fast. After seeing the moon through a sieve or cloth and her husband the same way, married women offer water to the moon and break the fast by taking water from their husbands. Then they share the meal prepared for the puja together.
Karwa Chauth 2024: Foods
Sargi thali has a variety of things - sweets, fruits, savouries, curries, rice and roti. It’s a full meal prepared for the daughter in law to help her for the day long fast.
Fruits are a must in Sargi thali as they keep the fasting women active and energetic throughout the day.
Dry fruits can also be added to the platter.
Mothers in law also include homemade sweets like laddoos, mathri, kheer or halwa in the Sargi thali.
A small serving of curd or raita can provide probiotics and help in digestion.
Lassi, butter milk or coconut water will help in hydration during the fasting period.
Whole wheat parathas or rotis should also be there in the thali.
