Kamala Harris- The first sitting Vice President of the United States to march in the LGBTQ+ pride parade.
As Pride Month celebrations grew in popularity around the world, US Vice President Kamala Harris took part in an LBGTQ+ community march on Saturday.
On Saturday, US Vice President Kamala Harris joined an LBGTQ+ community march in Washington, DC, waving to the audience and chanting "happy pride."Harris, dressed in a pink blazer and a “love is a love” shirt, walked for roughly a block as part of the Capital Pride Walk and Rally.
The Capital Pride Walk was attended by her along with her husband, Doug Emhoff. Emhoff's t-shirt, which resembled a rainbow, said "love first" 11 times in different colors.
She advocated for the passing of the Equality Act after the march. She also noted that the Biden administration recognizes the importance of LGBTQ+ rights advancement.
“We need to make sure that our transgender community and our youth are all protected. We need, still, protections around employment and housing. There is so much more work to do, and I know we are committed,” Harris said.
The White House stated earlier this month that no one should encounter discrimination or harassment because of who they are or who they love, in commemoration of pride.
"The President has the back of LGBTQ+ people across the country and will continue fighting for full equality for every American - including through continuing to urge the U.S. Senate to pass the Equality Act and provide overdue civil rights protections to LGBTQ+ people and families across the country," according to a statement by the White House.
Harris has long been a supporter of LGBTQ rights. She refused to endorse the constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.
“Every June, we celebrate the contributions the LGBTQ+ community has made to our nation’s past, present, and future—but we must recommit ourselves to doing everything in our power to protect the community from discrimination and harm and deliver full and equal rights to LGBTQ+ Americans,” Kamala Harris posted on Instagram along with a picture in which she was seen waving the flag.
