JNU Molestation Case: South West District police scanned 1000 CCTV cameras to crack it

A dedicated team effort, continuous technical and physical surveillance and a vigilant approach by a team of South West District police solved a sensational and blind molestation case of a PhD student of Jawahar Lal Nehru University.

Under the supervision and guidance of Gaurav Sharma, DCP, South West, the joint team of AATS, Special Staff and police station Vasant Kunj North made every possible effort and analysed minute details to identify and arrest the accused.

The robbed mobile phone of the complainant and the scooty used in the commission of the crime have also been recovered from the possession/instance of accused Akshay Dolai.

“On the intervening night of 17 and 18 January, on 12:42 am, a PCR call was received at police station Vasant Kunj North, regarding molestation of a student of JNU within JNU Campus by one unknown person,” Gaurav Sharma, DCP, South West District, New Delhi, said.

He added, “The staff rushed to the spot and met the complainant X who stated that while she was jogging at VC Residence Road, one scooty stopped in front of her and the rider tried to molest her. It was further alleged that after trying to molest, the accused person drove off with the victim’s mobile phone. Accordingly, a case was registered and the investigation was taken up.”

Sensing the gravity of the offence, a dedicated joint team of AATS, Special Staff and police station Vasant Kunj North of South West District were constituted immediately.

Initially, the challenge before the police was to identify the two-wheeler of the offender as there were no entries of two-wheelers at entry gates of JNU by security staff of JNU.

The teams comprising of Inspector Rajesh Malik IC/AATS, SW Distt and Special Staff, Inspector Surya Prakash, SHO/PS Vasant Kunj North, Inspector Vipin Kumar, other Sub Inspectors such as Gautam Malik, Sandeep Yadav, Anuj Kumar, Vivek, Rajeshwar; Assistant Sub Inspectors such as Krishan, Narender, Praveen; Head Constables Kamal, Hariom, Birender; and constables Ravinder, Sandeep, Akash, Nitin, Shiv Dayal, Vipin, Rahul and Satyawan led by Abhinandra Jain, ACP/Ops and Ajay Vedwal ACP/Vasant Kunj under the overall supervision of Gaurav Sharma DCP/SWD made a commendable effort to nab the culprit.

The police team checked and analysed the footage of around 1000 cameras installed at the JNU campus, Baba Gang Nath Marg, entire Nelson Mandela Road, Asaf Ali Road, the entire stretch of Outer Ring Road encompassing South West district and Munirka.

The JNUSU was protesting continuously and mounting pressure over the police. The accused was trailed from JNU Campus to Nelson Mandela Marg to Outer Ring Road and finally to Munirka Village. Further extensive technical surveillance of the spot as well as the suspected route was also undertaken.

Finally, the accused has been identified as Akshay Dolai, a resident of Munirka Village and nabbed by the team. Further investigation of the case is in progress.

On sustained interrogation, the accused Akshay, married and having two children works in a mobile shop at Bhikaji Kama Place, RK Puram, Delhi. He hails from 24 South Pargana, West Bengal. On January 17, after consuming liquor, the accused entered the JNU campus irked by a quarrel he had on that day with his wife.

In utter frustration, he started wandering on his scooty inside the JNU campus and saw a girl alone jogging towards east Gate. He stopped the girl and attempted to molest her but when she tried to call the police using her mobile phone, he took her phone and ran away on his scooty from the spot.

"This sensational blind case was solved with promptness and timely action of Southwest Distt. It is an appeal to JNUSU to cooperate with the local police in making the campus, which is not patrolled by local police, more secure collectively," Sharma said.
