Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi has spoken in favour of the students who were stopped from attending schools for wearing hijab. Gandhi has said that it should be up to a woman what she wants to wear and there should be freedom to do so.
She has tweeted, “Whether it is a bikini, a ghoonghat, a pair of jeans or a hijab, it is a woman’s right to decide what she wants to wear. This right is GUARANTEED by the Indian constitution. Stop harassing women.”
She wrote this with hashtag #ladkihoonladsaktihoon which is the Party’s slogan for women’s rights and empowerment in the forthcoming elections in state assemblies, especially, Uttar Pradesh.
Earlier Rahul Gandhi showed his support to the women by speaking in their favour on the day the country celebrated the Saraswati Puja. Rahul Gandhi wrote on his Twitter handle, “By letting students' hijab come in the way of their education, we are robbing the future of the daughters of India. Ma Saraswati gives knowledge to all. She doesn't differentiate."
The hijab controversy has flared up in Karnataka and protests and demonstrations are taking place by people in many parts of the state. The High Court is also hearing the matter and has appealed to the people of the state to maintain peace and harmony.
Even the state government shut down schools and colleges for three days fearing untoward incidents that might create a law and order situation.
