Today, December 11 is being celebrated world over as the International Mountain Day. People wish each other to pay their regards and respect to a place on the earth which is amazing, fascinating and refreshing.
Its captivating and diverse biodiversity needs an urgent attention world over. With the purpose of spreading awareness among masses, the United Nation Organisation declared December 11 to be celebrated as the International Mountain Day.
The UNO data suggests that 15 per cent population of the world live in various mountain ranges on the globe. Not only that, but it also says that almost 50 per cent biodiversity of the world lies in the mountains.
The UNO decides a theme every year and in 2020 it is “Mountain Diversity”. A relevant theme is chosen every year to address the issued which requires urgent attention.
Today, protecting biodiversity is one of the biggest challenges in the wake of rising pollution leading to climate change world over.
Widespread construction, cutting down of trees, excessive use of plastics and waste in mountains have become a real threat to its diversity.
Many activities may not directly impact the flora and fauna of the mountains but there an adverse effect on the climate indirectly poses a threat to vegetation, animals and humans lives.
“Let’s take a pledge not to pollute our mountains. Let’s make this day to take a pledge to do our bit to keep the mountain pollution and wastage free,” a well-know environmentalist said.
