According to Indigo Airlines, it will take steps to improve its operations and regrets the problems caused to the passengers.

IndiGo Flight Returns to Mumbai Due to Extra Standing Passenger: An IndiGo flight 6E 6543 which was heading to Varanasi from Mumbai was diverted back to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport because of a miss up happened during the boarding between a standby passenger and One with a confirmed ticket.
The incident happened on May 21, Tuesday when the Indigo was ready to take off they found out an extra passenger was standing at the back of the aircraft due to which they had to return to Mumbai airport.
According to the official reports, a standby ticket passenger boarded the plane without Check-in luggage as he wasn’t carrying any luggage which led to confusion and Indigo staff was aware of it.

Overbooking is a traditional practice for airlines and has been used by them many times to increase their revenue but sometimes due to flights being full causing problems for the passengers.
What is a Standby Passenger?
Standbys are people without confirmed tickets for a particular flight and are boarded if there are available seats.
There are also "commercial standby passengers” who have confirmed tickets and can board any plane on the same day if there are available seats.

What Happened after the IndiGo flight 6E 6543 was diverted?
After the flight was diverted to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, as per the Indigo spokesmen both carry-on and checked bags had to be rechecked before the flight could leave again which caused the flight to be late by an hour.
However, as per the reports, several passengers were dissatisfied with the flight being late and faced a lot of problems.
The spokesman further added, “IndiGo will take all measures to strengthen its operational processes and regrets the inconvenience caused to customers.”
A similar case happened in 2013 when a GoFirst flight left around 55 passengers at Bengaluru airport causing huge commotion and later a bill of Rs 10 lakhs was imposed on Go First Airlines by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.
